Crested Oropendola

Click photo to enlarge

Crested Oropendola standing on a branch at Río Guayabero in Meta, Colombia.

Large blackbird with a thick triangular bill. Dark blackish plumage, fading to paler reddish-brown at the rear. At a distance appears all black. Striking yellowtail and pale blue eye. Separated from other oropendolas by a combination of large size and dark colour. Often found in loose flocks anywhere with some trees, including forests, edges, and even disturbed open habitats. Oropendolas are colonial nesters that build hanging woven nests. Check out the audio sample for bizarre gurgling noises.
