Speed Is Crucial for SEO! That’s Why I’m Now Using AVIF
In a previous article (Why I don’t use the Google WebP Image File Format), I mentioned that I would not adopt the WebP image format due to concerns about image quality. While WebP certainly improves loading times, I always prioritised the visual integrity of my content, especially in areas like wildlife photography and design, where every detail counts.
SEO=Speed!
However, speed remains a critical factor for search engine optimisation (SEO), and it's something I take seriously. Faster websites rank better, provide smoother user experiences, and reduce bounce rates. That's why, after testing and evaluating various options, I decided to transition to the AVIF image format.
AVIF offers the best of both worlds
Tiny file sizes and superior image quality, often outperforming both WebP and JPEG in compression efficiency without compromising visual fidelity. It supports features like HDR, transparency, and wide colour gamuts, making it ideal for high-quality imagery such as photography and AI-generated visuals.
This change is almost live across my website
All newly uploaded images, including photography, aiGraphy works, and design examples, are being served in AVIF when supported by browsers. Visitors using unsupported browsers (i.e., outdated ones) will no longer be able to view images. I recommend updating your browser as soon as possible!
With this switch, I'm staying true to my standards for image quality while significantly improving load times and overall SEO performance.
If you're a fellow creator or designer, I highly recommend exploring AVIF; it's the future of web imagery.
